Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive, and incurable neurologic condition caused by dopaminergic cell loss in the midbrain. Currently the second most common neurodegenerative disease, PD will double in prevalence and affect over 9.3 million people by the year 2030.Advancing age is the most important risk factor to develop PD, and most patients present symptoms after age sixty. The diagnosis of PD is primarily clinical and may be supported by patients' response to pharmacotherapy. PD also has to be distinguished from movement disorders other than PD. This educational program will teach participants the diagnosis and treatment of PD and other movement disorders to provide optimal patient care.
