Pediatric Pain Management

Description

This activity will address pediatric pain management, providing clinicians with practical information that can be applied in day-to-day practice. It will enable clinicians to accurately assess pain at various stages of development, identify warning signs, and select appropriate management strategies. Clinicians will be empowered to treat pediatric patients in a safe and educated manner.

Pediatric Pain Management is a one hour online activity geared to the treatment of pediatric patients. It is designed to meet the criteria for risk management study in Massachusetts, including credit for effective pain management.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1.Manage acute pain in a pediatric patient, focusing on both opiod and nonopiod alternatives.
2.Recognize the risks associated with commonly used pain medications.
3.Identify the risks associated with the use of narcotics for pain management.
4.Identify patients who can be safely treated in a pediatrician's office, and those who need to be referred to a pediatric pain clinic.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for pediatric pracitioners.

Faculty

Ben Nelson, MD, Course Director
Massachusetts General Hospital for Children
Dr. Nelson received his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his pediatric residency and pulmonary fellowship at MGH. He is currently a board certified pediatric pulmonologist. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he is the program director for the pediatric pulmonary fellowship at MGHfC and the associate director for continuing medical education.

Dr. Leeman is a board certified pediatric anesthesiologist and pain management specialist.

Lisa Watt, RN, MSN, PNP
Massachusetts General HospitalforChildren
Lisa is a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner in the pain management center at MGH.
